My wife just received a Compaq Presario 2500 as a warranty replacement for her majorly overheating/locking up Presario 710US. I have to say that Compaq really went overboard in correcting their inadequate cooling mistake. This thing has two intake vents, two exhaust vents, two sets of heatsinks and two fans for the CPU. One fan runs constantly and the second kicks in only when needed. The main fan also is speed throttled according to temperature. I was going to run United Devices on it, but when both fans are running at their highest speed the noise is just too much. Plus there's a separate fan which I'm assuming is for the video chip. But I'd much rather have the extra noise than having the machine lock up every time it does something grahics intensive like our old 710US.
But as to my question, this machine came equipped with the slowest processor available for this line of laptops. A 2.0 GHz Celeron running on a 100 MHz FSB. According to this Compaq Presario 2500 PDF (first PDF link) this laptop COULD have come equipped with a P4 all the way up to a 3.06 GHz on a 533 MHz FSB! Are these processors either socketed or built on their own removeable PCB? Would I need to do anything else other than replace the CPU or CPU board? I'd like to think that I could simply upgrade this thing later on to keep it fairly modern.
