Compaq Presario 2175us - Keep it, or not?

Last week, I ordered a Compaq Presario 2175us notebook computer from OfficeMax. Cost me $800, after the $100 mail-in rebate.

Things I liked about it - Athlon XP-M 2400+, 40 gig HD, 512meg memory, 54g capability, 15" display, XP Professional OS.

Should be delivered to my home today or tomorrow.

Call it buyer's remorse, but I'm wondering whether I ought to keep it. I mean, it pretty much offers everything I really want in a notebook computer, but I'm wondering whether we're due to see a flood of Centrino notebook computers, equipped at least as nicely as the 2175us, with integral DVD writers, super-high resolution displays, better battery life, and cooler running, and lighter in weight, with various other good things. Because if I keep this computer, and next month Dell offers something way better for roughly the same price, I'm going to be bummed.

Now, I realize that with computers, there's always something better and cheaper, on the way. That's just the way it is, and I'm okay with that. But I guess what I'm asking is, are we due for a major jump in notebook computer performance/features in the immediate future? Like, is "the next generation" of notebook computer due to start shipping on 1 November 2003, or anything like that? Because if I keep the 2175us, and next month Dell offers a loaded Centrino for $700 after rebate, I'm gonna be wanting to kick myself for not waiting a few weeks longer. (My need for a notebook computer is real, but I could afford to wait a few weeks, if there's a good reason to do so.)

If it matters, I don't do much gaming, so that's not a big issue. Nor do I want an Apple computer. And please, don't turn this into a "Compaq sucks" thread, with stories about how you once had a Compaq, and now you'd never buy one again.

Thanks.

I have a Compaq Presario 2100Z. After I ordered it, I kind of regretted because if I had spent a little more money, I could have had <insert computer>. But I told myself that the mission was a budget laptop and that saving 200 or 300 dollars was worth it. Spending more money for stuff that I don't need, even though it's a good deal, would have been deviating from the mission.

Basically, I'm happy with what I have.
