Compaq presario 2100

Well this laptop was given to me from my co-worker to take a look at. TBH I havent had the time to work on it because of my work schedule he didnt care on how long it took anyways. The Laptop is a Compaq Presario 2100 With AMD Xp2400 chip version. When I plug in the powerbrick the laptop turns on (without me pushing the power button which to me seemed odd but made me stumped)then immediately soon you see the compaq splash screen it turns off. No matter what I do it does it. Next to the power button there are 4 other button with different icon like Envelope(email) question mark one etc etc. Press one of those it turn the laptop on and it turns off again. Other u wont be able to do it by pressing the power button. Maybe someone has come across this and knew what they did to fix it or found a solution. Because I dont want to start tearing the beast apart and come to find out was a simple fix or waste of time like for example bad mobo etc etc lol. Because of my time is why I am asking So would appreciate the help from all you tech guru's
