I just installed Windows 2000 on a presario 1920. The graphics adapter is a NeoMagic256. Win2K loads a driver for the card but the text and icons look terrible. Everything is very pixelated and disfigured. The laptop previously had Win98 on it and the display was fine. Is there any way to get a decent looking display in Windows 2000?

It almost sounds like you have "LCD stretch" enabled in the BIOS and you are not running at the LCD's native resolution (1024x768 for that model if I remember right). Make sure your display is set to 1024x768. Also, the latest W2K drivers for the NeoMagic are 6.04.00Q, released 09/04/00. You should be able to find these on driverguide.com. I have a "neotragic" chip in my wife's Tecra 8000.

Thanks :) I'll to change the resolution. What the key to get into the BIOS on these laptops? I don't get a prompt, it just has Compaq on the screen during post. Acutally, I haven't tried hitting ESC during post, that usually shows some info.

Well, I got into the BIOS but there wasn't any option for the display. I'll try the drivers and the resolution.

F10 when the white box appears in the top right corner when booting. There may not be an option for display stretch, not all laptops have that option. I had a Presario 1920 for a few months. Bought it from Hans007 and sold it on Ebay for twice as much after putting a new FL tube in it. Those have a removable CPU, a mini-cartridge. Once in a great while you can find one on Ebay. I bought two at one time, put one in my sister's Toshiba 490XCDT (PII 266->PII 400) and sold the other to a person who put it in his Toshiba 780DVD (PII 266 -> PII400). I belive that 1920 came with a PII300, right under the keyboard.
