Ok, this is a continuation/better explanation of a previous thread I started...but you can probably get the picture from this, and hopefully can help.
-Got a 1650 (w/out recovery CD or any other diags) in working condition; booted to windows, etc
-reformatted (even fdisked and formatted again in the course of working on this issue; oh, and also flashed the bios per support's suggestion), tried to install win98. computer hung for hours on "detecting new hardware". multiple reboots, it still hung, then one time it got passed that point and seemed to continue w/ a normal install routine (subsequent installations have had similar results-multiple hangs, then randomly passed the "hardware detection" point).
-after "completing" installation, computer hangs on splash screen for loading windows (ctrl-alt-del brings up a message of "windows protection error. you need to restart your computer" and the system shuts down).
-system boots into safe mode, device manager does not list a display adaptor or monitor, leading me to conclude that the display adaptor (a neomagic 128xd as listed when the system used to boot) was causing the problem-some form of driver conflict or something?.
-compaqs site didnt have the display drivers, so i found them on another site.
-cant install the drivers for display in safe mode, can't boot into regular mode of win98.
-that's where im stuck...I dont want to give in and purchase the CD if possible-but is there some other way around this problem that I havent come up with yet? some compaq diagnostic tool that will allow me to get the driver installed? some other thought on what the problem might be?
thanks for any help...
