I've been called upon to recommend a computer to my father. He has a rather large credit to Office Depot (home-built is out of the question) and needs a desktop computer.

Which to buy? Compaq or HP? How are their track records/products/support/repair facilities? I generally build PCs myself so I wouldn't know =\

Any help would be appreciated.

I know that. But those are the choices whether I like it or not...all I'm asking is which one is better? :\

I agree that hp and compaq make crappy computers but if you must get one go with the Compaq.

I would go with HP, but I seem to be outnumbered. I suppose you know, though, that both companies use inferior parts and often-times onboard sound/video/etc. Maybe he would just be better off with whichever computer suits him best for the right price.

Hk, compare the individual components each PC uses and make your decision from the info at hand. Some of the CRAPAQs use ALL name brand hardware.

I'd say HP. I've used quite a few Compaq's and they suck much worse than the HP's I've used.....although that's not saying a WHOLE lot....

HP. They are good computer, my dad works at one of the companies that runs the service for them, they dont fail that much. Most returns (75%) are just moron newbies , i would like to also stop the myth of there not being name brand hardware in these computers. Most of the stuff in them is better brand than most of the stuff you guys use. IE the memory is always a REAL brand, same with the drives , cases , mobos, power supplies.

I simply can't recomend anyone of those, i almost feel uneathical. There are bad computers, crappy computers, beyond crappy computers, and then there are Compaqs and HP's. You know what i mean.

HP is a million times better than Compaq. I cant believe when somebody said HP are the worst and are willing to take the evil Compaq over it. The thing is, HP is THE BEST retail OEM period, I have had experience with a few HPs and Im very pleased. Just a quick note I had Compaq machine, seriously, you dont want them.

Another thing, Compaq is putting on some special screw on the machines, if you take it off, you can't put it back on, and your warranty is voided.

"hp are THE WORST computers"

"HPs are all cramped up and tiny as hell. Get a Compaq."

"compaq is the less bad of those two"

Good lord, do these guys have any idea what they're talking about? Compaqs are the makes of devil. Need I say more?

HP- and if he works it right he gets a printer & monitor too.

The Compaq business systems aren't too bad, and reasonably reliable- I just started disliking them after seeing a bunch of 2.1 G hds die on them a few years ago!

Compaq makes some of the most cramped cases ever. I have one at home and it took me an hour to put an IDE cd-burner in. I had to take out all of my cards, my motherboard, my power supply, my hard-drive, and my CD-ROM just to replace the cable with one that had two connectors. But except for the case issue, I'd go Compaq. Even though I am never buying another pre-built computer for that reason and many others I don't want to go into.

No matter which system you decide to buy, do yourself and your Dad a BIG favor and get the extended warrenty. In so far as the actual system, it's hard for me to pick between the two without seeing their specs. On a blind call, I'd go with HP. This is only because of the headaches I've had with compaq tech support.

I've worked tech support for Both compaq and HP
with the compaq's there are problems that GOD can't even fix, weird ass things going on, the biggest thing on the HP's are the system resorces being low right out of the box, but that's easily fixed, and by far HP does better with the warrenties on their units, and we are all pretty cool here....
i'd go with an HP
