Clearance on Compaq Presario 1200 notebook for $787.91. As I recall it had K6-2 500mhz, 96 megs SDRAM, 6 gig hard drive and CD-Rom drive. Don't know how many there are or how widely they are available.

Just be sure to check the cage, don't just look on the shelf. I got an IBM thinkpad w/14.1 TFT, C466, 64MB and DVD on clearance there for about $1000 a couple months ago.

Hi,

Yes, you need a membership although a year's membership is only $35. Still a sweet deal if they have any left in your area.

If walmart.com still has those 10$ off of 50$ coupons, you can buy 1000$ worth of gift cards for 800$ and save even more :)

Nack - That's a good suggestion but what and where exactly is this "Cage" located? Is it only a Sam's Clubs? We have a few CostCo's here in Portland, Oregon.

ringzero - If that would actually work, it'd be sweet to buy a large TV (Sony VVega?) using that method. Is there a limit to the number of $10 off $50 Walmart GCs you can buy?

consider the gift card deal, though it offer 20% off, personally i won't go for it, esp. big ticket item like Wega TV.

I'd prefer to paid by credit card for an insurance (though 20% is debateable as it's a lot): like the extended warranty, price protection that they offer, etc.

Your mileage may vary

If partial of teh product is paid by GC or by other means, not FULLY paid by CC, you lose teh protections from CC.

That's why I always be careful about using AMEX and Staples coupon together because with Staples coupon used, AMEX card was not charged for teh full price, thus they are not obligated to honor the price protection. that make sense, e.g. you buy a $200 item using $40 coupon, AMEX card was charged only $160. price dropped to $150 and assume merchant won't honor the price match and you seek $50 price protection from AMEX, it's not fair to AMEX to give you $50 as your charge was only $160 (31%) instead of $200 (25%).

On the gift cards: Yes, you can buy an unlimited number of $50 gift cards, though you're going to have to place a sep. order for each card. So you're lookinag at placing about 15 orders. But for 20% off, I say it's worth it.

(And yes, you can use as many gift cards as you want on an item... My record so far is 11....)

Feb,

re: Staples coupons and Amex price guarantee, Has that ever happened to you? Your receipt will show that you paid the full price for the item you want the price protection on. If you've really been turned down because the total CC charge is less than the price at another merchant all you should have to do is always buy enough extra stuff to at least equal the amount of the coupons you use and then return the extra stuff. So if you have a $40 off $200 coupon spend at least $240. How is Amex going to know which items the coupon applied to?

Also re: Sam's club, they have a 90 return policy so if you bought with gift cards and found a lower price within 90 days couldn't you return/rebuy it with your CC? The price guarantee of the CC probably doesn't run 90 days anyway. So Sam's return policy is even better. For example, you buy something at Sam's club and find it cheaper 89 days later somewhere else. You just buy it there and return that one to Sam's club for a refund on your original amount. Not sure of the ethics of that though, still its not much different than you just leaving the original Sam's club purchase in the box and returning it later.

Just some thoughts.

The 90 Days rule might not apply to computer.
Correct me if I'm wrong, I think computer are like 15-45 days for return.

RandyL,

Thanks for the comment.

It almost happened to me once but later I found a Staples rep who agreed the price match.

I know I can pick up some other items for "free' using the coupon.

However, the deal won't be a good deal to me anymore.

e.g. I bought a Palm IIIC for $240 from Staples after PM and $40 coupon, if I buy $280 worth of goods and pay $280, I'm getting the $240 Palm IIIc at discount, while xtra $40 goods at FULL price.

First, I don't need other stuffs, so it would be of little value to me to spend full price on things I don't need.

Second, if I need the extra stuffs, I can split to 2 orders, $240 for Palm IIIc on one order, on another order buy $50 worths of good using $15-$20 off coupon. My total out-of-pocket pay will be $270-$275, while getting $290 worth of goods.

That's why most of the time my purchases don't quite qualify for the AMEX price protection.
