Ive upgraded a Presario 1600-xl1 to Windows 2000 (pre-Service Packs). Windows 2000 didn't install the drivers for the following devices
1. Modem (Tried getting the drivers from lucent but when I installed them the modem was still not installed)
2. Audio Controller (Got the drivers from ESS but same problem as above)
3. Network Card (PCMCIA). Doesn't seem to recognize the network card as a network card, instead it calls it PCMCIA 00038 or something like that.)

I'm starting to think that I need to either upgrade the bios or maybe d/l some Win 2k drivers for the motherboard, but I don't know what the motherboard is.

I have very little hope that I'll get help here, but I thought I might give it a shot.

BTW. COMPAQ SUCKS. THEY DON'T SUPPORT WIN 2K, NOR DO THEY HAVE ANY OF THE DRIVERS FOR WIN98SE (WHICH CAME ON THE NOTEBOOK). I HAVE TO DO A SYSTEM RESTORE TO GET THE DRIVERS. ISN'T THIS RIDICULOUS????????? I GUESS THEY EXPECT THAT PEOPLE WHO BUY THE DAMN THING WILL A. NEVER UPGRADE THE OS, OR B. BUY A NEW NOTEBOOK EVERYTIME THEY WANT TO CHANGE THE OS. COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS. I'M NEVER BUYING A COMPAQ AGAIN. I GUESS FROM NOW I'LL BUY MICRON OR DELL OR SOMETHING.

I don't know much about Compaq, but a lot of big manufacturers don't provide W2K support for older notebooks, particularly the consumer models. You have to scour the net to find a usable (not necessarily genuine Compaq) drivers.
For Win98se, as long as you have the recovery disk, I think you should be able to locate the drivers on that disk, even if your system was using retail Win98.

Well the notebook is probably 3-4 months old, definately bought after both ME and 2000 came out, so I don't think that it is too much to ask for to have them post/make drivers for these OS. Compaq had to send me a restore CD, because the one that came with the notebook only restored if the D: partition was intact.
