Copy & paste works; clicking the link doesn't work at all, for some reason.

Interesting deal and definitly there on their web site (page 12 of the ads as was mentioned). Try this link to see if it works for you.
Two things I'd say about it though; first, you would HAVE to upgrade to a combo CDRW/DVD drive. A DVD ROM does you no good as far as data saving, transfers, etc. Yeah, you can use a USB thumb drive but those are limited and costly when getting to the bigger sizes. So plan on adding the cost of that upgrade. Second, as should be obvious, would be the RAM upgrade to 512. Especially since it is "shared" with the video. However, you might be able to do that cheaper later.
Other than those two items, not a bad offering.
One last thing I'd keep an eye on, if not worry about was this little disclaimer: " Software manuals/media not included. ?Actual speed and capacity may vary." No software titles (but at this price, who cares?) CD's, manual is probably a .pdf file on the system (no big deal really) and it's theoretically possible that they could change the HDD on you. I doubt very seriously that they could/would "downgrade" below the 40GB though.

How about this "USB 2.0 Super Link Cable" for $12?
http://store.pcwebshopper.com/usb20sulica.html

The FW thread indicates that the AMD64 chip is the Socket 939 Winchester chip; possibly user upgradeable to a cooler running Venice core chip.

So has anyone actually purchased this yet? I went to CompUSA this morning to order one and taxes and shipping were an extra $144 dollars (Shipping was 89.99, only 1 option). Not hot at all, 544AR especially when you can get a Dell for less than 600 and not have to screw around with rebates.

I'm gonna go down to CompUSA and get one of these tommorrow. I just need a basic laptop for word processing and such and this looks like an awesome deal! Does this laptop have a mini pci slot so i can put a wireless card in there?

Wow just saw that post about shipping and taxes.. that's nuts! But isn't it still a much better deal than if you bought it direct from compaq? It's a better deal than that dell although it isn't as portable, but I don't think this is the notebook for portability anyway.

order with it onboard :) ..the Dell(600/700) is lighter if you just need a word processor rather than a desktop replacement

But they dell won't have the A64

This is just going to be a basic word processing/internet surfer. What do I need an A64 for?

I have the zv6000 from the OD deal last month(shipping at OD was only $40)..3200+ A64 w/ a single stick of 512MB ..am able to watch with the dvd/cdrw combo drive a DVD whilst on an external usb2 platform mounting a Benq dw1620 another DVD is being burned at 8x from file off the 60GB 5400rpm upgraded harddrive...pushes just under 60% on the ram and under 40% on the cpu(which is only running @ 997mhz ;) due to CoolnQuiet).. of course that was on the A/C adapter.

That would be odd for a Notebook to use Socket 939. The Mobile Athlon 64 technology is built on 754 pins.

I also saw the Register article that said AMD was going to release a 939 Sempron, but I don't see that that chip ever made it to market.

The Sempron 3000 information listed on AMD's site AMD Sempron FAQ
Show this to be a 754 socket processor only. Also since Comaq lists a range from Sempron 3000 through Athlon 4000 that most likely indicates this is a Socket 754 mobile motherboard.

Compaq FAQ
I wouldn't count on using a 939 pin Venice core in this laptop.

thanks,
C

BTW despite the lack of a 939 core I think this is an outstanding buy and find by the OP. Thanks Allisolm!

Wow, for $499 + $100 for the A64 that would be a damn hot thing for the poor Unix hacker who wants Linux or FreeBSD AMD64.

Is it just me or can't you add this thing to your cart?

How do you customize?
