Compaq <-> Netgear 802.11b interoperation?

Err, am I being stupid?

Compaq WL110 PCMCIA card won't talk to a Netgear ME102 access point... SSID are the same - checked MANY times, no encryption... Compaq link test claims an 'unknown' network is present, shows good SNR, but doesn't actually want to make use of it.
