Compaq laptop won't boot

A friend of mine tried to turn on his laptop and it just stays on the Windows XP screen during boot up. The bar is moving and the hard drive is making clicking sounds. Anybody know what I can do salvage my laptop. I'm guessing there is a bad sector on the hard drive.

You said that the hard drive is making clicking sounds... It is possible that your hard drive experienced a head crash. I would keep the laptop turned off until you get a handle on the exact source of the problem. You can damage the hard drive further if you leave it on for an extended period of time, if it is indeed a head crash.

thanks for the response, but i found the problem..there was a problem with one of the agp window's files and prevented windows from loading. I just deleted it and replaced it after boot up. Hopefully I won't have any more problems.
