Compaq Laptop Trouble

So last night while watching TV my GF's laptop makes this weird noise and freezes up, somewhat of a clicking noise and I am almost positive it was comign from the HDD due to where the noise was comign from. I powered it off and rebooted. It now posts, but doesn;t reach the Loading Windows screen, it hits the cursor screen then looks like its going to load and stays black. I can see the drive in the BIOS.

It did this a couple months ago, same noise, I finally got it to boot into Windows, backed her stuff up and reformatted and it worked fine till now.

I am thinking it is the HDD, any other thoughts?

1) Determine the hard drive manufacturer
2) Download and run their diagnostic utility on the drive

I'm willing to bet the drive is toast. The clicking you heard was impending doom, at least you were smart enough to backup the data!

My Compaq did the same thing, only it never worked again. I sent it in to Compaq, and they had to replace the hard drive, but at least it was free.

If your HDD is dead, take out the HDD and connect it to another computer as a slave (Use a adapter to connect it to a PC)

BACKUP whatever data you can. If that doesnt work, use datarecovery s/w
