Compaq laptop problems

My Compaq Presario 700US laptop will not start. Power light (green LED) comes on but nothing else. Worked fine until the other day. I think it may be the CPU (AMD Duron) or the MB as it will not post at all. I?ve swapped out the memory, so I have pretty much ruled that out. Also, I have tried to power up with the battery and plugged into an outlet and still nothing although power indicator is lit. Anyone have any experience with this model, as I?m ready to scrap it if I can?t get it working.

Try booting it with an external monitor, that ll rule out if anything is wrong with the display... also try booting with a bootable cd rom.

The worst possible thing would be a dead motherboard. The next would be a soldered video card or CPU. Hope for the best (which would be hard drive or any easily removable part).
