Just came across this product a few moments ago. Do you think it's a good deal? I think it's at least a decent one. Compaq laptop with PIII650MHz, 64MB (up to 320MB), 6GB, DVD, 8MB SDRAM, and 15" TFT display. So check it out.

(I hope the link works. Don't know if there's any session ID in that)

not to totally crap on your thread but, I have had reeeeaalll bad experiences with compuke computers, just awwful. this is just my experience, but be varrrryy careful about buying a compuke. I cannot recomend any of their laptops or desktops after what i have seen. You would be better off going for just about any other laptop. I personally recomend in laptops IBM, by far the best, and the second runner up would be toshiba laptops!

HP's are another laptop that cut corners and just suck. Read what ANANDtech had to say a couple months ago about HP laptops when they reveiwed the K6-2+ & K6-3+, They are next after HP on the crap list, Also a guy i work with has a sony Vaio and it has a god share of problems too, most are dur to win 9x and the shovelware of software that they loaded on that sucker he has. At least once a week he asks me to fix somthing else on it, All this is after the HD failed one day for no reason, the comp was on 10 months old and after dealing with sonys horrible customer service 2 times they finally replaced the HD. All data was lost and it took them 2 weeks because they ha to send it to AZ to fix the POS! It was a major nightmare!

Compaq is not the best but also not the worst. Personally I would recommend Toshiba and IBM. Haven't tried Dell but I heard the products are about 50-50. Sony laptops are good and well designed, but there are known issues of faulty hard drives (or controllers). HP and Compaq are on the bottom of my list. One good thing about Compaq is their International warranty.

I have a Compaq 1800XL180 and have had absolutely no problems with it. There's been a lot of discussion in comp.sys.laptops about the Compaq 1800XL3 series and the Dell Inspiron 5000e series, with most people choosing the Compaq over the Dell when compared head-to-head.

As for the others, there have been lots of complaints about problems with being able to even buy the A20p and A21p laptops from IBM, along with several complaints about IBM service. For Sonys, the general complaint is that if you have a problem it takes a long time to get them fixed since they have to be returned to Sony for repair.

What does this mean? "Your mileage may vary." You have to select a laptop based on more than just what's in the system. You have to also look at your service options. Laptops are pickier than desktops. They are meant to be carried around, and are definitely not as upgradeable as desktops.

Got three Dell laptops and I would not buy anything else. Great quality and very very quick service if you ever have to send it in for repairs. Looking to get another after xmas.

Not "name brand" but widely known computers...go to www.imperialdirect.com and click on "Hot Deals."

They have some REALLY SWEET deals going on, and they change them every month or so. I am still kicking myself for not buying the Sceptre PIII 800mHz, 16meg ATI Mobility, 1600x1200 dpi 15.1 Active Matrix screen, 18 gig hard drive, 128 meg RAM, V90 56.6/10/100 Ethernet/Modem, 8x DVD, and 3.5" floppy they had for $2200 last month. Its also Linux compatible and included a 1 year warrentee upgradable to 4 years (3 year warentee was best deal for only $130).

They have a new deal, but its not nearly as good a PIII 600mHz with most of the above trimming for $1900 or so. They have other good deals too, check them out.

Toshiba has been pretty good to me and my friends. Hardly have any problem with their hardware. And when there is a problem, it's normally solved within a couple of days. But then again I know quite a few Toshiba resellers, so I never have a hard time getting the laptops fixed :).
