Visor Platinum, or if you can get a deal on one, a Palm IIIxe. The Visor Platinum is my fave, but the Palm IIIxe is almost as good and there are some killer deals on them right now.

NFS4 will likely advise the Compaq iPaq. I've seen them and they're nice, but I find them far too expensive for what they do. (I don't play MP3 on my PDA, etc. I do use a simple word processor, etc. on my Visor Deluxe though.)

as far as feature concerns, are there any main differences?

I heard that Palm/Visor has more freeware/shareware?

The iPaq has a higher resolution screen and has built-in support for things like MP3 and video playback. However, for the usual things like email, AvantGo, contact lists, scheduling, simple word processing, both the Visor/Palm and the iPaq are fine.

For me, the extra features of the iPaq are superfluous and thus aren't worth the extra dough. Plus, the Visor/Palm have much better software support.

But you decide.

See my sig for more info on the Visor.

I got a Palm IIIxe, I didn't have the 500+ for the Ipaq and I have no real need for all the features it offers, maybe some people do. For me the Palm IIIxe represented the price for what I needed.

I bought the iPaq simply because my Palm V wasn't what I was looking for. I literially want a PocketPC and not a PDA, so the iPaq suits me very well. I can use it to run Java apps and add PCMCIA cards to it and such. Paying $40 a month for wireless net access on a Palm V was silly. Paying $40 a month for access on my iPaq or Laptop is not.

If all you really want is a calendar, phone numbers, and maybe a few other data abilities, a Palm based unit is for you. If you want a practical way to do computing tasks in your hand, get an iPaq.

How can we make a suggestion without knowing some basics about your needs and wants, can you answer these questions?
1) How much can you afford?
2) Do you need a color PDA? If yes, will you actually USE the color?
3) How important are form factor (size) and built-in rechargable batteries to you? If they are very important, you have $400 and don't need color then stop here and buy the Palm Vx.
4) Why do you want or need a PDA?
5) What do you intend to do with your PDA?

I heard that Palm/Visor has more freeware/shareware?

True, I could be wrong but I believe there are thousands of freeware, shareware and commercial applications available for the Palm OS (Palm and Handspring Visors). The advantage of the Pocket PCs is they are running Windows CE which is slowly getting better and better models.

If you want a full out, top of the line, color, plays MP3's, does Quicken, Excel, Word, plays games, has lots of memory, expansion, everything PDA then get the Compaq iPaq.

Personally if you're like me and have no real NEED for a PDA but WANT one then your best bet on power/performance/price is the Handspring Visor Deluxe for $149 after $50 rebate. You simply cannot beat that. 8MB RAM, expansion slot for all sorts of goodies including more memory, decent monochrome screen, USB out of the box, compatible with Palm OS (but not upgradable), etc.

If you want the best Palm PDA right now then get the Palm Vx, it simply cannot be beat.

Both Palm and Handspring are going to release new PDA models later this month so if you want the latest and greatest then wait.

So which one do you want?

Depends alot on what you use it for. I've got a half a dozen of these things. Basically I only use it as an appointment and address book. I've gone real fancy and paid bundles for expensive ones before. I reallized that size is most important, then battery life. All the extra stuff like mp3, pictures, books seem nice, but in reality, there are too many compromises and inconveniences to use regularly. I've got the Palm Vx now. Great phone and appointment book :)

Thank you all for the replies. ;)

I want a PDA basically to use it as an appointment/address book, checking emails and reading articles downloaded online. Would be nice if it can play games as well, but it doesn't need to do Quicken, Excel, or Word. Money is not too much concern as of now.

Also i want a color PDA, but i heard some complaints that you can't see the color very well under direct light.

I recently got a Palm IIIc and I love it. I have it with me all the time. I found a lot more uses than I expected. The color was kind of a must for me. BTW, the color Visor may be able to do more colors but when I compared them side by side I found the LCD interlacing effect FAR more noticable on the Visor.

Palm= Super Organizer
PPC= Trimmed down laptop

I had an ipaq i returned today (crashed on me) and bought a Sony PDA. But now i think im gonna dump the Sony Palm Pilot and go back to a PPC. Once you go color youre spoiled. I dont need all the features of the ipaq, but it works pretty good. Nice color screen, play movies etc...
