is there any magical remedy to solve this annoying hanging problem in Compaq PCs
i work in an environment that is full of Evos and DeskPros, most of them have Win98 SE installed
they hang all the time.
i tried everything, please guys help me on this issue
thanx in advance

Need more input.

Hanging how?

Are they on a network? If so, what type (NT, 2000)?

Are these machines imaged (Ghost, Drive Image, Xcopy)?

lots of (illegal operation) messages , freezing screens with keyboard and mouse beeps whenever moved, problems in shut down.
they are all conceted to Winn NT 4.0 server
no images were used. just clean installation

Have you tried them not connected to the LAN?
If so, did the problems still occur?

The admin may want to make sure that the Master Browser list is clean
of any stray (non-exsisting) clients on the Server.

If multiple machines are having the same problem, I would suspect some piece of software that is installed - some app that you guys use and installed after receiving the machines.

i doubt it sir,
because all the software we use are ordinary and proved to be supported by Compaq products.
and the (illegal operation) messages appear from time to time when lunching any program, and sometimes on double clicking a file or a folder.
any way, the software used are:
- adobe acrobat 5.0
- office 2000 pro
- email client software (first class)
- winzip
- sophos antivirus

all licensed

You may want to Remove FINDFAST if it is installed.
It is enabled by Default in Office2k (unless you choose not to install)
In the Control Panel, double-click the FindFast icon and Delete ALL indexes for it.
Then remove it from the STARTUP (Group) or it will rebuild the indexes.

Findfast is a terrible resource hog, especially when connected to a LAN.

Do these systems have the ATI RAGE PRO II video in them?
If the systems have less than 128 meg ram, turn down the Video Accelleration a notch or two.

i tried deleting indexes and removing FindFast. things are now slightly better
but some workstations freeze and restart by thier own.
Vidoe cards are Nvidia Vanta
all RAMs are 128M

my guess, but highly doubtful: heat problem....are there lotsa computers jammed into that one room?...

also, reformmating all the comps will do the trick 🙂
just reformat one @ a time....back up all the important stuff from all comps into 1-3 comps.....reformat everything...and viola.....distribute the backed up files.....and format those 1-3 comps...booom..it'll take forever...
