I bought a Compaq FX500 in the For Sale Forum because it came with the JBL speakers and the USB connectors (which my friend needed).

Now the fun. The monitor looks great but I can't get the speakers to work. I assumed they were just a set of speakers attached to the side of the monitor (nothing special) but for some reason they don't work.

Is there something special that I have to do to get this thing to work with a your standard PC and soundcard?

Anyone's help would be much appreciated.

Do these speakers have a 3.5mm minijack(headphone)or is it another one of compaqs famous propietary products?

The speakers and monitor are one unit. On the back it has one Power Cable, the monitor cable, a USB connection, Line In and Mic In jacks and the On/OFF switch. On the front it has a bevy of controlls for things like volume, muting, playing CDs as well as monitor controls and a headphone jack.

I have this monitor and it is just the what you listed. Win98se detects it correctly. The Installation CD that comes with it is only for the usb and to make the front buttons work. Nothing special to do to get the speakers to work.

gemstone,

Should the speakers work without the USB cable connected?

How exactly do you set this thing up? I have no documentation and only the 98 update file off Compaq's site.

hey i used to have this ,but then like all the compaq's I USED TO OWN, it died, lol do you have the compaq fx500 disk? make sure you install that, and have the speaker plugged into the speaker port and test that port with another set of speakers to make sure its the speakers and not ur sdcard

I do not have the FX500 Disc.

If I use other speakers the sound is fine so the sound card works.

The USB Hub works.

It's just the speakers and all the little buttons on the front that aren't working.

Yes, the speakers work without the usb cable connected. You need the usb connected only to make the 3 usb sockets and front buttons to work. For the speakers it is normal hook-up, one end into monitor and other into computer. The CD that came with monitor to install the usb and front buttons is only 7mb if you know of a way to I can get it to you. The volume knob won't work until you use the CD.
