the computer i am working on is a compaq presario no more than 30 months old. got it up and running, no problem until: Added a wd hd slave and when i rebooted i got the compaq splash screen. the cursor goes from the left upper corner to the right upper corner and is thicker and stays like that. removed the wd hd (slave on primary ide on grey) and still freezing like described above. took out memory, got memory error. took out keyboard and mouse, got that error. so is it getting stuck on the original hard drive? also, can i kill this splash and see a post?

regards

Did you set the drives to CS (cable select)?

When the curser goes to the right, hit f10 or f12, that enters the bios. I think you can enable a regular post screen there, its under "quiet boot" or something.

its f10 for compaq when that cursor goes to right side of screen pushuing it earlier or later produces nothing.

The f10 doesnt work. more detail on it... the cursor starts off as a small horizontal line the the upper left hand then turns into a a large vertical cursor in the upper right hand. What is odd is that this all happened after the addition of a slave drive. the slave drive has been removed and the problem persists. is there a diagnostics for compaq ( i know dell is ctrl+alt+d)?

yeah they have a diagnostic program so to speak but it runs inside of windows and is pretty useless. its on thier website. will it boot to a floppy or cd?

The curser has always zipped to the right, and F10 at that point gets you into the BIOS. Its only stays for a second or two usually. If its stuck then the post is stuck or something. Clear the CMOS and try again. Its a jumper on the mobo near the battery. Its (usually) 3 pins with a jumper, switch the jumper to the other 2 pins for about a minute, then back to the original. Probably says cmos next to it. Or you find it on the diagram thats on the inside case panel.
