Compaq Evo 310

all of the sudden, all of the fans in the computer stopped working. The front and read fans, and the hsf also stopped working. The sys admin said to put a large fan on it and open up the case. I have to do what i am told, but i thought it would fry the chip. It hasnt...yet. Anyone know why this would have happened or what to do to fix it? I figure its the mobo fan controller but i dont know how to tinker with it.
