Actually, I'm still using the $309 Best Buy closeout from
this deal, last year.
I posted in the thread at
allisolm's link because I was scouting for laptop deals for them. I didn't buy the CQ60, but a couple of friends did after I checked it out. This model is
CQ60-206US. The previous variations of this model that were offered at this price were the
CQ60-210US, which has a 250GB HD and the
CQ60-212US, which has the larger drive and 4GB of RAM. Otherwise, they appear to be the same machines.
The most interesting part was that all the drivers for XP are available for it. I found them in
this thread on HP's own user forums. The only one that was wrong was the link and listing for the Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader, and only because Realtek has a later version of the driver. If you intend to install XP, before you start, I can't stress enough how important it is to create a Vista restore disk set. My own lappy (the Best Buy closeout) required three blank DVD's or around 11 blank CD's. HP/Compaq ships these with the ability to burn exactly ONE set. Doing this will allow you to reset your machine to the original setup if your XP installation fails or if you want to go back to Vista, later.
Vista also puts a non-standard recovery partition on the drive. You can use Partition Magic or
DELPART.EXE to remove all partitions. Partition Magic will also set up a new partition and format the drive much faster than Windows can. DELPART.EXE is an old Microsoft utility from NT 3.1 that WILL blow off anything on the drive. It's no longer on Microsoft's site, but you can
download it, here.
Here's the driver info. Much of this is copied and updated from the HP forum posts:

Most of the drivers will set up easily except of the following:
1- Nvidia Geforce8200 Graphics Card:
After you install 178.24_geforce_winxp_32bit_english_whql.exe, you will get an error message "The Nvidia Setup program could not..............."and it will quit the installation, then do the following (copied from a forum):
1. Go to device manager and right click unknown vga device, update driver.
2. Dont have it auto search.
3. Select dont search, i will choose the driver.
4. Select Display adapters, choose the have disk button.
5. Have it point to C:\nvidia\Win2k\178.24\English\nv4_disp
It will give you a list of models, there are 2 geforce 8200's in the list. Click the first one in the list and hit next/ok.
It will give you the continue anyway option, proceed throught it,
Reboot computer and voila, success.
2- Both Conexant Audio & Modem Driver:
After extracting " Audio e Modem conexant x Compaq CQ.rar" file using Winrar or whatever program you use,
1. Execute audio\setup.exe
2. Execute modem\UIU32m.exe
HP's info pages also lists a firmware update for a webcam. They spec it only for Vista - check for XP before installing. This may only install under Vista.

Fixes an issue where video recorded with the web camera contains lags in time.
HP's page for ordering replacement parts specs it as a Lite-On web camera. Check Lite-On for updates for XP.
