Hello All,
An old neighbor called me and ask me to look at his compaq. He had opened it up to put in a CD writter(Sony). But now the computer will not boot, no beeps, no screen, just the lights on the tower. And no HD activity. Any Ideas would be great.
Thanks in advance.
All have a good Sunday.

aside from stupid end user tricks (FDD power plug in the cdaudio connector), make sure the new drive is jumperd to cable select

I would suggest to check the obvious things. Like making sure all the connectors are still in place. Disconnect everything and put them back in place. Maybe he just jostled something. This incluled the ram, CPU, etc. Also disconnect the cd-rw until this problem is fixed. It is possible that he either fried something with Electro static discharge, or the PS got burned out from the extra wattage needed from the cd-rw unit.

Hi,
The model is a 5151 Presario. Diconnected the CD writter and no change.
I'm going to reconnect all cables and cpu and ram now.
I'll check to see how much ram is in it.
Thanks all, I'll get back to you all.

no suprise :) trust me in the long run it may accually just be better!

But if you really must make it run again, check all the connections and diff things he could've disturbed while putting the CDR in.
