Compaq Armarda M700- Original memory not recognized when I added a 256meg?

500mhz, latest bios.

The M700 came with 64megs built in, and a 64meg module. I popped in a 256meg module, and the laptop wouldnt boot. i took out the original 64meg and put the 256meg in it;s place and it worked.

when i put the 64meg into memory slot2, the laptiop says invalid memory module.

What's wrong?

It means that with any notebook, not all memory modules are 100% compatibile. Buy a diff 256MB module or just love the ol' 64MB and life will be grand

the 256meg module works w/o the original 64meg. use both modules and laptop does not boot up.

obviously, i'm keeping the 256meg in if i cant use both.

but why can't i use both modules?

when I used pc133 ram, it wouldn't work. guess it requires pc100.
