Got a couple year old Compaq 3019us laptop and according to HP the BIOS is bad. It's a know problem, and they extended the warranty to cover it, but the kid I got the laptop from never bothered to do anything.

I can't find any directions for replacing the bios, or reflashing it blind. System lights up, DVD ROM spins up as does hard drive, just black screen and no video on the monitor connection either.

Before I tear into it, does anyone have any info on this bios? In the past I've pulled bad bios and either reflashed them on another system or replaced them, not sure if that is an option with the HP/Compaq.

If I'm in the wrong section let me know and I'll repost elsewhere.

Thanks....

Notebookparts.com has your motherboard for $319.99. I couldn't tell by looking at it if the bios chip is removable. I would ask compaq if they can send you a replacement bios before tearing it down. You may just want to transfer the hardrive over to a newer notebook and use it for backup if you have personnel files to save.

Thanks, but I don't want to put a lot of $$ into this. It's basically a "free" laptop, and I was tying to keep it that way. HP offered to repair it for $200, i declined. I'll pull it apart and see what I find.
