Basicially, Circuit City has was appears to be a pretty good deal on these with financing that this poor college student can afford. The only thing that really turns me off is the incorporation of a Radeon M6 64 MB GPU. This guy claims that he can run Warcraft III on his in 1024x768 with details all cranked up..I dunno, I have to question that.

Basically, I've got about $1,200-1,400 to spend..and from what I've seen so far it's just about impossible to find anything with a decent GPU in that price range...

Thoughts?

First off, welcome to AT FredFromNowOn :)

That lappy has specs better than a lot of peoples desktops, I mean look at it:

1.67 GHz Athlon 2000+
512MB RAM
60GB hard drive
64 megs (shared) for video

It's more feature-packed than my current rig and I don't have any issues playing Warcraft at all, hope this helps :)

A Mobility Radeon with 64MB backing it will be plenty for WC3, especially with that kind of CPU/RAM horsepower pushing it along. Don't expect record-setting battery life or particularily cool operation, however. An XP2000+/512MB/ATIM6 is going to be able to cook bacon after a half-hour or so. :Q

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. What do you guys think about other more graphic intensive games? UT2K3 for example. I mean, keep in mind, I'm not buying this replace my desktop (Athlon XP 1800/512 PC2700/GeForce 4 Ti4200 128 MB) but I do want to make sure I'm getting plenty of bang for the buck. :)

I guess the bottom line is..Should I buy this Compaq or wait until I have the cash to buy a refurbished or used Dell Inspirion 8200?

if your not buying to replace your desktop why are you concerned with gaming??

if it were me and i were keeping a desktop for gaming etc, i'd go for a much smaller and lighter machine. raw power isn't everything you know. especially in a laptop.

Just because I'm not buying a notebook to replace my desktop doesn't mean that I don't want it to perform well. I LAN on a pretty frequent basis and it would be very nice if I was able to "get by" with bringing my notebook.
