Staples has the Compaq Presario V2000Z Notebook PC, AMD Sempron 2800+ 1.6GHz for a low $499 after a $150 instant rebate and a $50 mail-in rebate with everything minimized. It's part of the Staples weekly flier but I think it's a good deal to stand by itself now, especially since they have removed the $75 shipping charge.

Per the HP/Compaq website, the processor is a low-power "mobile sempron" part @ 25 Watts. Faster Turion processors are also available.

I added extras to the base config (i.e., Brightview, XP Pro for $29!, bluetooth, 12-cell battery, 5400RPM drive, etc.). I'll add another 512MB of RAM (768MB total) for ~ $50. My final price will be $738!
