I think it's an awesome notebook and I'd have one right now if it had the mobility 9600 Pro as an option. If I wasn't looking for a notebook that can play 3D games then I would get the X1000 for sure. I don't think you can find a better deal.

If your only use for the laptop is programing you may like the higher rez on the zt3000 (released by: HP aka the same company)a little better. But the zt is new so it costs a little more...

...the radeon 9200 may not be top of the line, but it will play current games with all the effects turned up at good speeds.Old games fly!Sure it dosent have directX9 support but Half Life2 isnt comeing out till April. And considering the fact that the video card is upgradeable there is a good chance a 9600 will be out for it by that time.Even if not, it will still play the game, just with directX8.1 .

Compaq rates as the worst in relaibility according to PC Magazine. The number of issues with their laptops and the horrible support/repair combination drove them way down. It is not broken down by specific model so the X1000 may be different, but the reputation of Compaq is worth noting.

I think the x1000 is the exception to that rule. : ) People who own one seem to have very few complaints.

As a part of HP, they now offer full support + accidental damage insurance, w/garunteed 3 day (i think thats the right number of days) turnaround. It's a bit more on top of the standard price, but well worth it for a nice laptop, imho.
