Got a formal rejection letter for a summer internship at a company. It was signed by HR person and had my name on it.

A few hours ago i got an email from the leader of the team I was interviewing with and said he wanted to extend an offer to me. He said the HR person (the one that sent me the rejection letter) would be putting together a formal offer letter for me shortly...

It doesn't sound like my interviewer had any clue that I got a rejection letter

WTF?

Oh well, I'm assuming that offer letter was sent in error. Anyway, just bored and wanted to tell a story.

Maybe they decided to offer you a position other than then one you applied for.

That's what i'd do. Bringing it up to them is just asking for someone to say "oh yeah, that's right, we did decide to reject you."

i carry with me a rejection letter HR sent me three weeks after i started this job that i have been doing for seven years

HR might be clueless and sending out a mass mailing that is wrong, i would go with the phone call guy over the HR letter

Actually, I think i remember that the first person i interviewed with was from a different group. I royally f'ed that interview and I think the letter referred to that position. It was hard to remember since I interviewed with 5 or 6 people that day with all but 1 being in a different group.

I had this happen in the opposite order. It was for a full time position. I had been talking to HR on the phone and they were flying me out to CO from IN to see the area. The next day I got a rejection letter!

I was

Silly HR mistake I guess. I called them up and they had no idea why I got the letter.

Apparently the rejection letter was for the position i was applying for, not the other group.... interesting.

Do it george costanza style. :)
That episode was inspired by actual events at SNL while Larry David was a writer there.

Several weeks after I started my current position, I got an email from HR saying that they had received my resume and would let me know if any positions became available.

That's why I don't think I will ever bother with on-line submission anymore. I got this job by walking into the office with resume in hand and then calling the manager every few days until I got an interview scheduled.

You were probably their #2 choice. The guy they originally wanted turned them down & the HR rep was a bit premature in sending out rejection letters.

Different group or their primary choice rejected them after they sent the rejection letter.

I would go with the fact that the initial group said no way and that triggered the letter.

A second group took a little longer and decided that they wanted you. Rather than force an embarrassment on HR, they want to feel you out first to see if you are still interested.

Initially initiate all correspondence through the e-mail POC.

UPDATE: I called the interviewer and he said the rejection letter is a mistake and they are looking into how it happened. He said I should receive my offer letter soon! Yay!

Same thing happened to me. Sent in resume. Interviewed. Got a call next day: "Expect an offer in the mail." Offer came via courier two days later, signed and returned next day. Three weeks into the job, got a generic HR letter to my home address, saying: "Thank you for your interest, we do not have anything for you at the moment, but we'll keep your resume on file should something suitable come up."

Left hand, meet right hand.

the perosn who they originally gave the offer to may have denied it so you were next in line. It has happened to me before. not sure why they would send out the stuff when nothing was official yet, but it has happened.

another thing companies do (IBM does this) is send everybody a rejection letter so no one can track down who actually got the job.
