Company Rant

Now let me start off by saying that I don't mind giving to charity but what bugs me is that the company I work for has these United Way meetings once a year and this years is getting closer. Basically what they do is take everyone in the company into a meeting where for an entire hour they talk about how much United Way has helped people, also there are usually a few personal stories and of course the video. This friggen video has to be made by the people who used to do those old heart wrenching phone commercials. All you can do is sit there a watch. Then they pass out donation cards already filled out with all the important details all that is left is for you to enter in the amount.

Personally, I think this whole thing is total crap. The last thing I need in my day is for some people I don't know to try to guilt me into giving them money. If I wanted to feel guilty I would call my mom. It really makes me wonder why the company is so gun ho about this. Do they get some type of tax break for getting a certain amount of employees to give up money?

Yeah, I actually wish I knew. And I will figure out someway to get out of it. But my manager likes us to "look good" and go to all these BS events. Personally I would much rather do some work then listen to these people talk.

Yeah, I'd get out of it too. I hate it when people pressure me for money. Kinda takes the meaning out of charity if somebody twists your arm for it.

They get nothing. All they are trying to do is help make people aware of ways they can support their community. I don't know why you'd feel guilty. They tell you about the various agencies in your area and what they are trying to do, and give you an opportunity to help out if you'd like. That's really all there is to it.

These days people don't seem to know much about what goes on in their community. Too many people feel the government ought to take care of everyone's problems but there are plenty of good people trying to solve problems without depending on a tax handout. I learned about a neighborhood food bank at a UW presentation that I had never heard about before, and when I saw what they were doing I decide to help with donations. Without the presentation, I never would have known about it.

Give if you want, don't give if you don't. They try to make it easy for you to give, but there's no reason to feel pressured into it.

No they don't, unless the company matches the contributions, which many do.

Many large "socially responsible" companies sponsor all sorts of charity campaigns. Some are a bit more hardcore than others. They really get bad when the person coordinating the charity efforts has it as a goal on their performance review and take it upon themselves to ensure 100% compliance.

I no longer even think of giving to the United Way as they are not an efficient way to donate your money. My money and time are donated directly to the charities of my choosing and anyone saying I am a bad person for not giving to the United Way or other similar charity can kiss my ass.

i completely agree, but will add

i think the UW is a corrupt charity and i think there are better local charities that people can give $ to

It's just that the videos are always... "Little Jimmy is really sick and needs help" "the United Way is trying to help Jimmy but we need your help, you don't want Jimmy to die do you?"

After my Mom died (1964) United Way turned my Dad down for assistance. Claimed he made too much money. I turned them down 10 years later when asked to contribute. They (my company) took $1 a week for a year. I complained over and over. No one cared. The thought proccess was EVERYONE should give. I believe in charity. Don't believe in large orginazations that have execs making over $100,000 running them. Many scandels over the years involving UW.

that's horse manure. guilting you into giving something is exactly what they're doing. what if I already give to another charity that actually affected me in some way. I don't want to have to give somewhere else too. Horse manure.

United Way Statement on Executive Compensation

In addition he will receive employee benefits that include housing relocation assistance, car allowance, health, pension benefits and life insurance that includes the continuation of life insurance benefit from a previous employer. An incentive bonus is available if certain objectives, as agreed upon by the Board, are achieved.

Edit: DOH! you beat me

Yeah, they are a bunch of crooks. It's what happens when a good thing gets too large and becomes corrupt.

so they get u out of work for a whole hour for free? then donate 1 hour's worth of wages and call it even

still doesn't compare to exEtrade CEO's $80 million salary the year they lost $200 million
or Dick Grasso's $200 million pay package for a non-profit organization

United Way is crap. Do a Google and find out what percentage of cash donations actually go to help those they claim to help. I think it was something like 20% goes to help those in need.

Since you never consented and the bastards took money from your check regardless of your protests, you should have been recompensed by taking $52.00 of office products home guilt free.

My company does the same thing this time of year. United Way posters all over the place, etc. I wonder if we work for the same company?

We are having ours right now also. I have to choose some unlucky soul in my dept to get the pledge cards signed and turned in by the end of the month.

How about this instead? You do a Google and then come back and share what you find. You're so far off, it's ridiculous.

By any chance, do you work for UPS? I know they do this same exact thing. I wouldn't give them a single cent. I'd rather give to a charity that's local to me.
