Company of Heroes: Great game, douchebag developers

So I've been playing CoH for a few days now, it's arguably the best RTS I've ever played. Everything was going great until St. Fromond. As I like to turtle, I saw a busted bridge and thought "perfect". I built up my base, bombarded the Germans a little, and turned the bridge island into a veritable fortress. Then, knowing from previous levels that the AI doesn't care about retaking resource points, (it'll kill an observation post, but won't actually recapture the point unless it's a mission goal), I did some aerial recon and dropped a squad of airborne across the river to take the resource points. This was all well and good for a while, and it felt 1337 to have one unit take out 5 infantry squads and 6 resource points. I figured I could starve the Germans, then take the town when they'd be unable to reinforce. Given that the allies used a similar strategy on D-Day, it's a valid approach right? Apparently the devs didn't think so...

Suddenly, I've "taken St. Fromond". Of course, all of my forces are still blockading the bridge, so I desperately blow the barricades, and charge into the square..., only to be slaughtered by the German forces that I'd been ignoring up to this point. (The Germans had made several assaults on the bridge. They failed miserably). WTF. I thought the whole point of CoH was versatility with a small number of units but noooooooo... the devs anticipated someone would try this and put in a hidden timer to thwart it. Obviously, the Germans recaptured the point with ease, and I just wasted 45 minutes. :|

Sry. Added the warning, although I didn't reveal much of anything unless you count the crap the devs did (what little else I revealed is brutally obvious early on). Also, there are 4 different difficulty levels. I don't know how the AI reacts on the others.

No problem. It's just that I was planning on getting this game and its expansions at some point. So when I realized what your OP was going to be about after reading a few lines, I quickly had to stop reading :p. I'm a big Dawn of War fan, and I believe this game uses the same engine. FWIW, they also did some cheesy scripting in the DoW games in some of the campaign missions, like this one mission in Dark Crusade where you inexplicably lose all of your special units with no explanation after you complete the mission. Also, various instances of timer-based enemy respawns.

Not really enough to deter me, but there were some infuriating missions nonetheless.

That mission was heavily scripted, I agree. The AI units would rally off map. It happen also in the forked street mission, when you secure a supply line. You weren't the only one annoyed by the off-map rally.

turtling hasn't worked well for me in that game, but I agree one of the more enjoyable RTS's I've played in the past few years.
