I was hoping for some ideas that I can use to create a "template" or find one online.

The idea is we will be moving in a few months and I must come up with a paper template of everything that should be done as far as the IT department is concerned. Things like: Labeling computers when they are disconnected so we know whose it is, in what time frame we should call the T1/phone company to transfer the service. I have zero experience in moving an IT department so this will be a good learning experience.

Give me your ideas!

Paper template? As in like written guidelines or what?

My IT group just moved a group of our users (only moved like <10 ppl tho) and we used those rolls of ceran wrap stuff. Take tower, keyboard, mouse, etc and wrap the peripherals (that fit) to the top of the tower with a piece of paper that has their name on it. I thought it was kind of stupid, but just tellin' you what they do.

Do a proper inventory so you can create a file with computer names to each employee. IT should have been on the ball a long time ago and should have that already if they do any sort of remote administration or push of software.

everytime i've done a move, a moving company comes in and gives us stickers...we then proceed to mark up where each piece of hardware goes. Everything had a sticker, and everything at the new location had a corresponding location.

That's what we did, we just finished moving over 100 people 20 miles, there was so much work involved it was insane. New phone systems, 50+ toll free numbers, fax lines, furniture, etc... Good luck!

Start now... call phone company / communications provider / etc.

There are long lead time on some of these things.

I don't handle the communication portion so I'm not 100% sure, but I thought I heard that we have a 90 day lead time minimum for T1/T3 moves / installations.

Like previously mentioned, we have a moving company come in. They provide stickers, boxes, and bags for people to label/pack things with.

Typically we have technicians disconnect and reconnect all PC's, Printers, Faxes, etc. Just so we know it's being done properly.

Make sure you verify all the power requirements for each room. Sucks to have the fuse blow after powering up only half the pc's in a room.

Do you have a server room? If so I'd start looking at the new place from now, like was mentioned to check power requirements, weight load bearing on the floors for racks, AC systems, etc...
