Company blocks out all gun pages!

I like guns and I like to browse and look at them from time to time, even though I don't own one. However, the company censors all gun-related webpages!!

But what gives them the right to say what I can't or cannot do during lunch? It's not like guns are offensive and I wouldn't go postal.

Its their computer, their network. You are a guest on it. If you don't like it, change companies.

I restrict pages regarding weapons.

Why? Why would you restrict access to information? As long as it isn't X rated stuff, I don't see the point in allowing a worker to go to Handgun Control, Inc's website, but not the NRA's website.

Unless the company is in that industry, they employees have no business there (period). They can happily surf whatever they want at home, on their own time, on their own equipment.

Me too. It's company policy, and understandably so. I personally own 3 guns and am an avid hunter and shooter. However, it's not appropriate material for viewing at work. You may be stable and merely browsing, but who's to say that new intern isn't a psycho?

True. Still, a respectful employer will recognize that it is in their best interest to allow the employee a reasonable, amout of free time -- and internet access. Nevertheless, it is 100% within their rights to deny acess to whatever they want to.

They restrict access because they are a company and companies have learned that it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to any issue that could be interpreted badly. No company wants to be sued into bankruptcy because they learned "after the fact" that they should have done something that they didn't.

Exactly, giving Internet access to employees is something that needs to be watched, because we don't want to be held responsible for some stupid lawsuit. All I need to be blamed because some guy researched what gun to use when he shoots his wife. In this day and age, it's not that unlikely.

I think the real underlying cause for this and a lot of other threads posted on here is the broken US legal system. The blame no longer falls on the person committing the crime, it falls on somebody else.

I totally agree, but I have to think of the good of the company.

Our Surfcontrol admins inadvertently blocked the weapons category here on the Army installation I work at. That went over real well until I recommended we unblock it due to the nature of a soldier's business.

We use SurfControl, as well. Good software!
