If you do go, make damn sure you are getting paid extra.
i don't see how it would apply with my company, but i would expect a fat bonus

BTW....if you leave where you are, it will most-likely hurt your career. It pays to stick close to home so you get more recognition for projects locally. Moving so far out might get your humanitary aid type recognition, but that's not always what management looks for.

you may not want to leave your "comfort zone" but really think about how you... just a single person, could help literally thousands of people who lost their entire lives. You could be helping rebuild lives.
It cannot be decided by anyone but you.
What Lola said.

next time you're in need of help, we'll just say "oh we can't help because the incentives aren''t good enough"
money should not be the reason for not going unless you can honestly say to yourself that by going you will be putting yourself on the streets do to lack of a few weeks pay. No wonder this country is screwed.

Ah, the classic dilemma. Should you help people in need, or worry about yourself?
Well, I would be paid regardless. Why should I endanger my own comfort and safety?

My company just asked me if I wanted to volunteer down south to help rebuild the natural gas distribution system. They need natural gas engineers down there with extensive computer knowledge to restart and help rebuild the gas system (data tracking, real-time monitoring, random tech support).
I'm afraid to go. I have a nice stable life here (NYC), nice girlfriend, etc. I have big projects coming up here that i'm responsible for as well.
Will this help me career wise?
