Why do you think 600mhz wouldn't be enough for college?

Really? You must have a really large Java app then. And firebird seems to work fine on my 233mhz.
Although one thing about old notebooks is the hdd is usually really slow. What model do you have right now?

I just got an Averatec (Sotec) 3150H for $700 after rebate at Staples.

Specs
Athlon XP-M 1600+ (@1.4GHz)
256mb RAM
DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive
56k + 10/100 LAN
Integrated S3 ProSavage8 (up to 32mb)
12.1" XGA TFT
Windows XP Home
4.3 lbs.
10.6" x 9.6" x 1.2"

I'll post a review of it later. Overall, it's very good. Casing is durable, good design. Their website is

www.sotecglobal.com

Not very good for gaming, but it would be good for work. :D

Can you upgrade the ram in your current laptop? I had a PIII 700 with 512mb of ram it was fine for programming and firebird.

However, my new laptop is a pentium-m 1.3 with 128mb (haven't upgraded it yet) and it struggles with just about anything.
