Compact video editing/photoshoping rig

Hey guys, I want to build a computer for video editing, photoshoping, and some gaming (nothing extremely demanding, some css, bf2 etc). I have a budget of about $1200 USD give or take 100. I don't need monitors, keyboard, mouse etc. But most importantly, I need it in a compact case. I was roughly thinking...

Q6600
8600GTS
4 gigs of ram
X-Qpack 2
(leave some money dedicated to make the case quieter, probably new 80 & 120mm fan, and a aftermarket heatsink)

Can anyone cook up a detailed list?

Thanks

If you want small and quiet, consider a different case.

This $75 Antec will probably suffice, including a PSU decent enough to run your rig as specified. If you don't like it, then look for a different steel case, such as the In-Win V series. My fav is V605 for $60+ship available in black and black/silver. Note that the PSU in the In-Win isn't as powerful as in the Antec, plus the quality is questionable (not "crap" but not "great") so you may need a separate PSU. The Antec uses a 120mm rear fan and the HDD location at the bottom has really soft grommets, so you can probably build a quieter system with it. However, I don't really like the vents on top nor the partitioning of the PSU/5¼" area. The Antec is 0.8" wider than the In-Win, though it is around 0.6" less deep. Your choice - either one would be good for a quiet system. If choosing the In-Win, you can get the same PSU as in the Antec, just shop for an Antec EA380, or one of the higher wattage varieties. Alternately, get a Seasonic S12-II, Corsair VX450 or any other low-medium wattage good quality quiet PSU.

For the 8600GTS video card, look for one with either passive cooling (MSI and Gigabyte have them) or one with external exhaust (MSI). Passive will be silent, but the external exhaust ones are usually fairly quiet while running a lot cooler. Personally I'd get the passive one. 🙂

For CPU cooler, I think the Antec case can fit a regular Scythe Ninja heatsink. Just run that fanless (if you're not overclocking). The proximity of the exhaust fan should keep the CPU cool enough. For the In-Win, there's a side duct so you can either use the stock fan, or get an aftermarket unit that uses a big downwards-blowing fan.

Speaking of fans, undervolt 'em all a bit while keeping an eye on temps.

Hm I see. But I was also looking for something that had a handle, so I can sorta grab and go with it.

As for the video card, the problem with getting a dual slot cooler is that I'm going to have to sacrifice a PCI slot (or w/e is ontop of the PCI-Express slot). I will try to look for a single slot passive cooler, but those are kind of hard to find.

I believe the Gigabyte is a single slot cooler, but the heatsink extends above the video card thus it will not work in the X-Qpack2 as that is where the power supply resides.

The only cube style mATX cases I'm familiar with are the X-Qpack "style" (they're sold under a few brands). Hopefully someone who has worked/owned a Sugo can chip in their two cents.

ok, thanks for your time and help.

I think I've pretty much settled on the Sugo Sg03. Even though it's not exactly a cube case, it's pretty light, has good ventilation, and should be pretty portable.
