does the speed on them really make a difference?

Im going to be able to buy a 128mb 8x one for 30 dollars, but then again--i could buy a 128mb 25x one for like 36 dollars off of ebay.

Is the difference in speed noticable?

this is for a digital camera, btw.

you probably won't notice the difference on your digicam...even if your digicam has one of the newer readers, the time it will take to write will probably be 1 or 2 seconds more on the 8x...

but its your call since the price difference isn't that big

PRODUCTION SPECIFICATIONS:

Data transfer rate to/from host: 16.6MB/second burst (66% faster than Most Retail CF)
Sustained write: 3.78MB/second maximum (500% faster than most Retail CF)
Sustained read: 7.62mb/second maximum (500% faster than most retail CF memory)

from the ebay auction.

can it really pull off those kind of speeds?

Yes you will notice a difference. 1sec extra to write a photo to memory is a LONG time. Read about it on dpreview.com

The question is how big of an issue is the speed to you? I wouldn't give a flyingass about the writing speed as long as it writes.

I just like to have things done quick..

I hate when something is really slow and i KNOW that I couldve bought the same thing and had it be faster.

That's true, but it takes a second for the flash on your camera to recharge after taking a picture anyway.

you can definitely tell the difference when using a fast or slow compact flash in a digital camera. i'd definitely go with a higher speed compact flash like kingston, viking, or samsung. just take a look at the test at dpreview.

Most of the more expensive digicams have a fair amount of RAM in them now. We have an Olympus C3030Z and it has 64MB of SDRAM to allow photos to be taken rapidly and still get them saved to the card. Maybe yours does or does not, but that would affect my choice.

This particular cam takes smartmedia, but that's beside the point.
