Compact Flash to IDE adapters

I'm looking to buy a CF-to-IDE adapter for a FreeNAS build that I'm starting but I'm getting confused.

Half of the auctions on ebay claim to be bootable adapters. I thought all IDE devices were bootable? Can I buy one that doesn't say it's bootable and boot an OS off of that?

Okay, simplified: Can you boot off of any device with an MBR on an IDE channel?

I'm not aware of any reason you wouldn't be able to. CF essentially is an IDE interface, just with a different physical connector. The adapter does very little other than connect the pins properly.
