with all the diff types, is one superior to all the others. Is there one type that fits more devices, has a better price point ?
Is there any one type that is the defacto "STANDARD"

They are the same thing
Compact flash card is a flash-memory based storage memory

Flash memory is just an general word to describe non-volitile semiconductor memory

SD card, MMC cards, xD cards; are all flash memory

right, but is one type more universal ? able to be used in a wide range of devices ?

example: is MMC used mostly for cameras, or is it used for MP3 players ?

or stated another way, of all the devices that use some type of flash memory is one particular type of flash memory going to fit and be compatable with more different types of devices ?

I buy a MP3 player and some type of CF to use with it, 6 months from now I buy a diff MP3 player, I would like to use the same CF card, or maybe use the same card in a digital camera. see what I mean ?

CF/MS/MMC/etc: and prob other types I don't know about yet.

The most common formats right now are Comact Flash (CF) and Secure Digital (SD).
I think MMC and SD are compatible.
The SD cards are smaller and about the same price as CF,
and are being used in more and more products, so it might be the best choice.

It looks like XD is gaining popularity. Its the smallest yet and pretty fast.
Many new PDA's and cell phones use it. A few MP3 players too.
