As I'm just starting to get into digital cameras, I was searching to learn more about the speed ratings for the compact flash cards that many of them use. I came across the following article, which seems very good.

Bottom line is that the speed of the card is not an absolute thing, that some cards work faster in some cameras than others, but put the same cards in a different camera and things can change. There also seems to be a big difference between the speed of the interface on digital SLR's and "regular" digital cameras like the CoolPix. Worth a read if you're going down this path.
