Comp wont reboot or shutdown?

I just got back from using system restore to fix a botched Audigy 2 driver update, no idea what happened but after attempting to install it I got all sorts of problems I wont go into.

Everything is back exactly as it was now except when ever I try to shutdown/reboot, I click the usual button in win XP and the LED's flash a bit then stop and nothing happens, it wont reboot or shutdown it just sits their like I told it to do nothing. The only way I can shut it off is to hold the power button in for 5 seconds. When it boots after that it doesn?t do the scan disk for errors check or anything.

Any ideas what?s wrong? Does the method of holding in the power button to switch it off damage the comp in anyway?

Thanks

Holding the power button down FORCES shutdown. This can corrupt data on your hard drive, and unfinished tasks do not get saved. (You obviously do not run a RAID array- it would die very quickly)
Try just a quick "press and release" of the power button to initiate a soft power off. (This can be usually be changed in the BIOS)

Something is definitely amiss- I would start checking power management settings.

Worst case- fresh install..

Thanks for the advice. Pressing the button once doesnt power it off, and i cant see anything wrong in the power management settings.

*sigh* formatting is not how i wanted to be spending my tommorow. :|

EDIT: Im good now, system restore saved me! And i always thought that thing was useless, good thing i didnt disable it.

Did you figure out what it was causing the problem? I had the same problem on a new Dell and I ended up reformatting.
