Comp. turns on but does not post .................

This is a freinds Compaq "Presario" computer & she asked me to look at it for her .

Like I said , it powers on but does not post .......... As in "Nothing" comes up on the Monitor at all .
I did try a diff. Hard drive with Windows installed ........ but still nothing .

Don't know the manufacturer of the Motherboard but the cpu is an ............
AMD k6-2 500 & has 128 mb ram

Everything else such as Sound & Video are on-board crap .

She said that she was having troubles with it a couple times before & while it was still under Warranty , she took it in & they said they replaced the modem both times she brought it in .
After she got it back ............. it would run for a week or so & stop working again .

I think they fed her a ton of BS about the modem just to get her off thier backs but what can you do ? (Warranty was 1 week away from being expired)

Anyone have any ideas ??....................... My first thought would be the MB & then the CPU .
I have no spare parts to test with btw so if it can be pinpointed directly , I'll replace the parts myself & save her the $25-30 an hour for taking it somewhere else .

Thanks for any help .

any beep code?

take the modem out and see if it boots.

but if it does not give u any display/beep code u might have to replace the m/b since video is built in.

1 more!!

Ok I did the easiest thing first ................ I replaced the ram with a 32meg stick I had lying around & it booted up (very slowly) **LOL**

Then I shutdown , took my 32mb ram out & put her 128 back in & it booted !!!

Was the ram not seated properly or what ?
