I am not sure why, but my computer seems to shut down randomly, whether I am doing somehting or it is being left idle.

The monitor still shows that it is recieving a signal, but its a dead black screen, I here no action from the CPU or the HD, but power is still being recieved because the fans are running.

This is a recent problem and I built the comp myself

Anybody have any clue why, I think hardware has gone defective, but I am not sure which part.

I am running a 600E@800mhz pentium on an Asus P34VX (something like that) 196 mb p133 RAM, SBlive, 20gig MAxtor AT66 HD, ATI Rage Pro 32mb Vid Card, the rest shudl be irrelevant, on win98 operating system, the computer is on a college network if that could mean anything

Any help would be aprreaciated

Well, either your Computer is just lazy and it feels like just suspending on a regular basic, you have a faulty power supply, or you just keep accidently hitting the power switch, :).
