Comp Restarting Problem

Hello,

I have a problem with a newly built system. It restarts if there?s music playing or generally some Audio going on. No matter of it?s Video/Web/MP3. I?ve tested it number of times. I ran whole Adobe?s CS2, ran 3D Studio Max 8, Adobe After Effects 7 turned on scan-disk then browsed the HDD?etc?etc? Without any audio going on it runs no problem. In fact it eats all of that and asks for more. 🙂

But, If I play some music in the background and try to do something, even if it?s not remotely comparable to that previus sequence, the comp just restarts.
So I figure it?s audio. Here are the specs before I continue:

ABIT AW8 i955x (integrated Realtek audio, gigabit LAN)
Intel Pentium D 930
ATI X850XT (Powercolor)
2x 1GB of Kingmax DDR2 533 in dual channel mode [had no choice here really 🙁 ]
2x Hitachi SATA II 160GB HDDs
TAGAN PSU 480W
Themraltake SWING
NEC CD/DVD RW

Freshly installed Windows XP, SP2. All the latest drivers by Intel, ATI and Realtek. Latest BIOS

The thing is I?m not sure anymore. If it?s indeed audio, is it software or hardware? I figure it?s probably software because if it was hardware ?. would it work at all? But then again, you never know.

Would reinstalling Windows help? I?m hopeful but also doubtful that some drivers are just?. well, crazy.

I?ll probably mail Abit but figured to post it here first, get some more info and perhaps?hopefully? get the solution. After all this is my favorite tech site on the net, despite the fact it?s my first post.

Thnx in advance guys,

Peace,

I had similar problem, to make a long story short, it turned out that my old copy of windows xp pro sp 1, which I slipstreamed with an old version of sp 2 caused severe conflicts between my video and sound cards. I have no idea why that happend, but when I made a new slipstreamed windows xp pro cd, with the latest version of sp 2, and reinstalled, the problem was gone.
I hope that helps.

Thnx a lot.

I will try intalling brand new copy. I also got SP1 installed then installed SP2. After that my brother did the windows update and that's when the whole thing started.
In the meantime I got my hands on embeded SP2 Windows so I'll try installing it and check it out.

Thnx again for the help. I was so desperate I even e-mailed ABIT. *blush*
🙂

Peace

ABIT sucks.

sorry, had to get it out.

Reinstalled Windows and still the same problem. Finally I put in PCI Audio, disable Onboard from BIOS, and it works perfectly.
Sucks.

One thing is sure though, ABIT, never again. :|

peace

I find this very interesting. I'm pretty sure you had an good, old fashioned IRQ conflict with the integrated sound, which is bizzare. You could have tried to see if Windows would let you change the IRQ for the integrated sound.
