Comp Problems Thread

well I reformatted my computer, having just added a 300GB IDE Hdd.

I've had some problems with that http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=27&threadid=2009536&enterthread=y
but I hope they will be sorted with WinXPSP2.

My internet explorer has stopped working (I need it for windows update). It simply doesn't load up any page, while firefox does. I searched for similar symptoms on google and downloaded and ran winsockfix and lspfix (as mentioned: http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windows/...nt-Work-Cannot-Display-Page-Error.html
After I ran it IE worked, then next time I came to boot up my comp, the entire thing didn't work. So...back to the drawing board and running a system restore... everything was fine, except IE won't work again. (aren't computers wonderfully entertaining). I'm at a loss to know where to go with this problem...

Another problem is that windows seems very unstable - quite often when it started up and I open something (outlook/firefox/IE, etc) and the program will become unresponsive. So I tried out a ctrl+alt+del, end program, etc... The program doesn't close. Try ctrl+alt+delete again. It still doesn't close. Try to restart the computer... doesn't happen. Turn the computer off at power (give up). I don't know what to do with this problem either.

I've decided to slipstream SP2 onto a cd with WINXP and reformat. Comments welcome. If you know what causes any of the above problems... lemme know!

This is most likely a software problem. Have you tried a clean slate. Meaning delete partition, reformat and re-install. I said "delete partition" because this is the only sure way to get rid of any bugs in a hdd. Reformatting is not a guarantee to remove bugs. Do not use restore since you will always come back to the same problem. Clean slate and if the problem is still persists, then start looking on the hardware side.
