One day my USB ports just quit working. I reset the CMOS and plugged in a PS2 keyboard and got the PC running again, and sometime later the USB ports started working again.

Everything was going fine until I found my keyboard laying on the ground one day & the PS2 plug half hanging out of the port. The computer was making this wierd beeping noise and was hung again, so I rebooted it.

I got the no keyboard present & CMOS had been reset to defaults messages upon the boot. I unplugged the board, reset CMOS again, and plugged in my USB keyboard. I restarted the PC and got into Windows and everything just fine again.

So for about a week it ran fine and everything was good except I would get some wierd graphical issues when playing Madden 2006, like a blinking or something. It's hard to explain but I figured it was due to overheating on the card or bad coding in the game. Well this morning I was taking a shower & my wife says the computer was beeping. I knew it was the same problem and went to reboot the PC, but it hung again at the Post and I am at a total loss as to what the problem is.

I have not had a chance to really troubleshoot it, but it is giving me a black screen now so I'm worried it's something serious. I could use some feedback, but I will be doing a cardboard bench when I get home to assure it isn't just shorted. Still, does anyone have any experience on these symptoms at all? Here's my specs:

MSI Neo4-F
AMD 3500+
Patriot XBL 1gb
Antec 550w TP2.0
ATI X800XL
MX 518
Saitek Gamer's Keyboard
generic ps2 keyboard
Logitech cordless rumblepad 2

I originally posted this in another forum, but since the original post I have come accross the two error messages I mentioned in the subtitle of the thread. CMOS battery failure means I probably need to clean the battery or replace it at Radio Shack.

Display switch set incorrectly, display switch is incorrect or set improperly is not exactly what the other error message say but it is something to that effect and I have been having problems with this PC and think this error message could be the solution to all the problems...or it could just be an offshot of the CMOS battery. Does anyone have any idea about the display message, or better yet, some experience with it?

this might help

How old is this system ? It does not appear to be very old. Which makes me wonder about the CMOS battery being weak/bad. But it is possible to get a bad component on even a brand new system.

I would try a new CMOS battery, first, but I would not get it from Radio Shack.

Where would you get it from?
