Comp Newbie: What are the basics of overclocking

hi, im new to building and configuring systems, i've heard much of overclocking, i would like to know how. any help is much appreciated.

better yet, how do i find out how fast my cpu is running and at what temperature? please forgive my lack of knowledge in this field. lol

I wouldn't try overclocking your store bought system. The bios probably has no options for cpu voltage, fsb, etc that you will need. I would either sell your system and start over, or just get a premium video card to boost your performance. The radeon 8500 oem is a great choice for performance/value, and sell for $100-140, depending on features. Read them carefully, as some features, such as tv-out, may be disabled on cheaper versions.

You have yourself a pretty nice system as is.The 2200+ doesn't have the head-room to overclock such as the 1600+ or 1900+.The 2200+ is pretty much at its limit.you can squeeze a little out of it but wouldn't be worth the trouble. You have a good video card aswell so I wouldn't bother changing it.New video cards are around corner so you might want to wait, but the Ti4200 is more than enough for the time being.

if you want to overclock, sell your system and buy a p4 1.6-2.0ghz. that athlon 2200+ will not overclock well at all. the p4s have been overclocking up to 1ghz above their spec. if you want to overclock what you have now, you need to do the following:

-unlock your cpu (search google.com for how to do this) - basically you connect your L1 bridges together and it lets you run the chip at any speed you want
-do the voltage mod to the cpu (connect all of the L7 bridges)
-go into your bios (press del at startup) and tweak your fsb and multiplier settings

check www.overclockers.com for what speeds you should expect from your setup. good luck.
