Comp has power but will not POST

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum wanted to say hi first =)

I decided to lap my heatsink last night after realizing my CPU temps were kinda high (~44*C idle). So i spent 3 hours lapping it and when i went to put it back on and start my comp, it ran for a sec or 2 and then one long beep and shut down. i figured this was the auto temp. cut off due to me not applying enough termal paste.

this happens maybe two more times and then the comp stays on without giving me the long beep. However, i don't get a signal to my monitor (monitor says "no signal"). So i shutdown with the power button in the front of the case and then restart it. Everything turns on and seems ok except i don't get the usual one short beep and loud HDD sound and again, no signal to the monitor.

i have no idea what's wrong with it, i tried resetting CMOS and completely unplugging my comp and reseating all cards to no avail.

Here is my current setup:

-Soyo KT-600 Plus mobo
-generic ram 2x512
-athlon xp 3200+ OC'ed to 2.4
-ultra 400w psu
-200gb HDD

thanks for the help

This happened to me with a socket 775 cpu. My problem was one of the 4 clips on the heatsink wasn't 100% closed. Good luck.

I've found that sometimes throwing the CMOS jumper for a minite or two doesn't completely clear the chip... you might try setting the jumper and leaving it for a while. Your one long beep sounds like it could be a memory or video problem too... have you pulled all the cards and reseated them?

Thanks for the help so far. i checked the clips and they seem to be on correctly and i left the cmos jumper for about 4-5 hours as i slept, dreaming about the new comp im gonna end up building heheh.

as for the memory, im going to pull a good stick out of my bro's computer and see if its any better. the video, however, is going to be a pain to check because i dont know anybody that's still using agp =T
