Sweet Cat5e deal up again;)

you get this in the kit....

Package Includes:
1000-Foot Cat5E cable
100 30u RJ-45 connectors
Cat5 Crimper
Network Cable Tester
Cable Tester carrying case

have seen this before, but they've been oos for about a month now, and I can't find the original post to put back in the spotlight so no gripes about reposts.

wish they had these in stock 2 weeks ago, I just paid $90 at lows for the same cable and $22 for 24 rj-45 connectors.

cmx is riser cable, non plenum, must be run in open ventilated areas, like under the floor and in attics, not in the space between floors, or between your ceiling and attic, nor does it include air ducts(same as conduit) and no conduits, but it can be used commercially, but only in understood evironments, such as custom made patch cables, as is does not meet fire safety codes for plenum areas.

If you are looking for some of the older threads you can find them by searching for "5e". To save you the time they are Here and Here.

that 2nd one is the one I saw before, I previously searched for cable kit and comp geeks, probably why I couldn't find it.

Your description of riser rated is HIGHLY inaccurate. For example consider the definition of plenum:

Main Entry: ple·num
Pronunciation: 'ple-n&m, 'plE-
Function: noun
Etymology: New Latin, from Latin, neuter of plenus
Date: 1678
1 a : a space or all space every part of which is full of matter b : an air-filled space in a structure; especially : one that receives air from a blower for distribution (as in a ventilation system)
2 : a general assembly of all members especially of a legislative body
3 : the quality or state of being full

A plenum is basically the space where return airflow is made back to the air distribution system (HVAC). In a business building this is usually the drop down ceiling area as most commercial buildings design this area as the plenum where return airflow is back to the HVAC system. In residential construction you will be hard pressed to find plenum areas in homes as almost everything is ducted. No cable, Plenum or otherwise is allowed by code to be installed in duct work.

Plenum rated cable simply doesn't give off toxic fumes when burned so that while burning in the plenum of the building the HVAC system won't distribute lethal fumes to the rest of the building. In almost any residential construction riser rated cable can be installed anywhere in the house because most residential construction doesn't have a plenum.

Great HOT Deal BTW.

How big is your condo to need 5000' of cable?

I used to install enterprise class networks, cabling, server builds and setup, network security, yadda yadda yadda. I just put that in there for those that were planning on wiring anything that might be up for a fire safety inspection, personally I don't see the need for plenum cable unless it's in a building too large to evacuate quickly.

And on the 5000' yards of cable for his condo, it's much easier to pull multiple cables through the same space when you have multiple reels than to run and/or measure seperate runs from 1 spool, he said he'd have plenty extra, probably something like an extra 3500-4000'.

huesmann: lobadobadingdong said it exactly. :) Heck of a lot easier make one pull and get all five wires up there than snake the wires through five times. Worth some extra $$ to avoid the hassle/time.

BTW my shipping to the east coast was $18/box! Hurt the deal badly. :( Still cheaper than my local electronics enthusiast store who wanted $55/box for 500'. Home Depot has 500' for $35/box, which would be ~$180 for five boxes. I considered cancelling the compgeeks order as it was almost $80 more expensive, after taking the rj45 heads into consideration. In fact I still may. But then I might not get the 48 port patch panel in time. :-/ BTW $65 for a 48 port cat5e patch panel was a pretty good deal from what I've seen. My local store wanted $180 for it.

rahvin: Thanks for the definition/analysis. Crystallized my understanding with your explanation. :)

Just FYI, after shipping my order was $54.84 thanks to a 10% off coupon floating out there (third google hit gave it to me without even clicking!).

Thanks for the deal!

I got a box of this last time it was around and luckily compgeeks warehouse is only about 30minutes from my house so i went to pick it up.

The crimper and tester are nice but the cable definitely not top quality. it seems to work fine but just feels cheaper than others. Also the "white+stripe" wires have extremely small colored stripes that look similar to eachother (especially blue/green).

It still works and is a great deal, despite the complaining above.

Bought one of these kits back in December. My only gripe is the cheap crimper, but for that price you really can't complain.

I've got about 10,000' in my house- 3 dual runs (voice and data), all Cat 5E PLENUM rated in each room (except bathrooms, of course, only voice in there). Dropped a coax in each location as well, all with modular inserts in a triplex faceplate, Leviton Certified to Cat 5E specs ;) All terminated on a 96 port patch panel, with the voice cables connected to my Norstar CICS KSU. Heck, I even ran speaker wire for the media room and used Leviton modular inserts to terminate those as well. That turned out very well indeed.

Cost? $0.00! Just used materials from the office...got about 13 phones in the house...LOL

yes, but also by the limitations of 300feet(100metres) per segment of utp and ethernet that means he has 3334+ runs, wow almost enough cable to cable the pentagon(more exageration :D)....or at least a small high rise office complex.
