Comp Crashes Every Hour

4Gb ram
GTX470
Antec Signature 650w
Gigabyte Ep-45-ud3r
Crucial M4 64GB

Running Windows 10 here. So sadly, my comp seems to crash every hour, on the hour like clockwork. It starts back up like nothing happened, but crashes again in another hour.

I don't play games much anymore, but when I started up CS GO, the game crashed within 10 minutes. I lowered the settings to laptop mode and CS GO didn't crash again.

So what do yall think is the issue? I've had this comp for 7 years. I'm thinking it could be PSU maybe?

I think the problem is that you are running an OS that has not passed preview state.

Were you having any problems on a production OS? That would help to determine if the problem is hardware- or software-based.
 
Do you get blue screens?

You can check your C\Windows\Minidump folder if you aren't sure. If you don't have any minidumps, the folder won't exist.

If it does, a program like Whocrashed can give you an idea as to what the problem is. BUT, I don't think it operates properly in the preview yet. This one may be helpful, if nothing else to find the message.

If you have no blue screens, look for error messages in the event viewer.

I don't know your computer savvyness, so let us know if you have any questions about this.
 
Thanks for the help so far mate. I know my way around windows, but I'm not that knowledgeable.

So, the thing is, Windows locks up after about an hour. At which point I manually restart it with the power button. If I don't manually restart it, a blue screen eventually pops up. Ever since installing Win 10, I manually restart it.

Bluescreen view didn't find any blue screens (makes sense since I restart before that happens).

Event Viewer has a critical log: "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first." I think that's me mashing the power button.

Interestingly, right before the critical log, there is always an information log that says "File system filter 'npsvctrig' has succesffully loaded and registered with the filter manager", but maybe that's a normal part of booting up?
 
That's "just" a minifilter for legacy drivers AFAIK, so you should be fine there ("just" meaning that it is a normal and good message, not that it isn't important).

As a guess, I wonder if anything is overheating.

For a real answer, you are probably going to need to let it go to a blue screen, at least once.

You also might want to uncheck the Automatically restart option. The BlueScreen viewer will give you details about the error, but I usually like to see the message and get an idea of what I am dealing with.
 
Since it happens on the hour you may want to look at scheduled tasks at some point (I assume 10 has this, I am still on 7 home) For now I would stay with ketchup79's GR8 advise, he has forgotten more than I know.

There could be so many issues with win10; ms and third party drivers not production ready, buggy core OS, ...
Using a development build OS not only that it won't fix your issues, but you'll possibly encounter other new and non related issues which will make debugging the initial issues even harder. I don't think that your goal is to make identifying the problem harder or is it? Better switch back to a production ready OS like win7 or win8. That's a good way to start.

It seems like something is getting hot. have you cleaned out the dust lately from the cpu and power supply? Do you have another PS to try? Can you go back to windows 7 to eliminate the possibility that windows 10 is causing problems?
 
I would go back to W7 for troubleshooting since you've determined that W10 doesn't help.

Still, the fact that the game settings influence the speed of the crash would make me want to exclude temperature problems first. Download some utility that logs the temps of all components in a nice graph and see if they reach critical levels.
Also after 7 years it could be the PSU, try with another one.
 
Uhh, wow, you all just glossed over that he has a Crucial M4 SSD. Which had the 5000 hrs bug. After 5000hrs of power-on time, it crashes every hour, like clockwork.

OP, update your SSD firmware, that's what's causing your crashes.

I never knew about the Crucial M4 SSD 5000 hr bug.

Just flashed the SSD today.

The comp has been running for 3 hrs straight now, so the problem seems to be fixed!!
