I just finished building a new comp and I'm having problems getting it to connect to the internet. I have it hooked to the network and its sharing files with other computers but for some reason I cannot get it to connect to my router or the internet. My system is as follows:

Win98SE
P4 2.6C
A-bit IS7(using onboard Ethernet)

When I type 'winipcfg' into run the only ethernet adapter shown is 'PPP Adapter'. When I log into my router(from another comp) and pull up the DHCP client table, my new computer is not listed. I have installed TCP/IP, IPX/SPX and NetBEUI protocols.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong? This is becoming very annoying and I'm at a lost of what to do...

Thanks

networking is funny. first you want to go into your hardware manager, or device manager. right click my computer and click properties, then hit the tab... check if there is a network adapter in there. and Dial up adapter isnt what you want. should have something to do with ethernet. if there isnt one then theres your problem right away, no NIC drivers installed. if there IS one installed then there is still a problem, because theres no entry for it in the network. say you had a "Etherlink III Ethernet Adapter" installed. then in your network it should say "TCP/IP -> Etherlink III Ethernet Adapter" in addition to your TCP/IP protocol. that jsut how Win98 is. the first thing i would try is removing all items in the netowrk, and removing the adapter from the device manager (make sure you have the 98 disc ready it MIGHT ask it to recopy files). Force the computer to redetect all that stuff and hopefully install it properly. If it still doesnt work, then it MIGHT be an issue with the router settings... highly UNLIKELY, but possible... or the cable or the adapter itself, check for link and activity lights etc etc... networks suck, lol good luck
