comp can't find router, keeps 169 address

I just got my new rig up and running, it's an MSI delta-L board, with onboard LAN

I installed windows XP, installed, the drivers that came with the motherboard, and was working fine.

i got on the internet, downloaded the service pack, and then after a while my connection stopped working.

i went and checked it out, and it's got a 169 address, or else a 0.0.0.0

i've tried disabling/reenabling, uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling the drivers, and it just won't go

any suggestions?

edit: seems my router was messed up

run command prompt, type "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /all" without the quotes

double check the cable going to the router. check that dhcp is still enabled on the router.

make sure the nic is working in the Device Manager. Or try a different nic if you have an extra.

Also, check to see if the cable is being crushed, loose, or anything out of the ordinary.

Basic network trouble shooting.

Ping 127.0.0.1 - If it works goto the next step - if fails... reinstall TCP/IP Protocol
Ping host IP address - If it works goto the next step - if fails... reinstall TCP/IP Protocol
Ping Gateway - If it works goto the next step - if fails... check the cables and connection
Ping remote address - If it works Cognrats - if fails... mostly there is a DNS issue or name resoluting problem.
When all else fails - Call Al Gore. 😉

weird, turns out one of the ports on my router broke. is it just coincidence, or did i somehow blow it out while configuring my computer?

Entirely possible it's a dead port, have had the same thing happen myself. Kept forgetting which one it was and trying to use it until I got off my butt and taped over it.
